Last weekend, we received an unexpected call from an animal control officer in Illinois about an unknown species of macaw being surrendered by an elderly owner who was no longer able to care for her multiple animals. This owner showed remarkable selflessness by recognizing she was overwhelmed and choosing to give up her beloved pets. We knew we had to step in and provide a safe home for her only bird.
We quickly identified the macaw as a Blue and Gold, estimated to be around 25 years old, and sprang into action. Just two days later, we were driving home with Cara settled in the backseat.
It’s clear Cara is well-loved, though a bit under-socialized. She’s adjusting very well and has already picked her favorite person in her foster home! Like all birds who come into our care, Cara received a thorough wellness exam right away. Our partner veterinarian confirmed she is physically healthy—despite her chest and legs being as smooth as a baby’s belly. Once her bloodwork results return, we’ll focus on working closely with her to determine the best type of household for her future.
Our hearts break for birds like Cara—and their owners. No one expects not to outlive their bird or suddenly become unable to care for them due to aging or health challenges. Part of our mission is to educate the public about the lifespan of parrots and to emphasize the seriousness of the commitment involved in owning one. We are always here to help anyone who might be struggling to care for their bird.
In Cara’s case, our support meant placing her in our foster program. For others, assistance might include husbandry guidance, providing supplies, or simply being a listening ear when their bird becomes overwhelming.

And a special thank-you to the Murphysboro Police Department for reaching out and helping to coordinate Cara’s transfer to STAR.
