Adoption Radius

Adoption Radius – Explained

We have heard some concerns being expressed about our adoption radius and we wanted to take the time to address these concerns, as well as explain why this policy is in place.

While we understand that our radius can be disappointing to those who don’t live within it, it was put into place with the best interest of our birds in mind.  Here is why we believe an adoption radius is important:

  • Transportation/safety – Parrots are incredibly sensitive and fragile birds.  In the same way that we don’t ship birds due to long distances, we also don’t consider long distance adoptions.  Long distance traveling can be very stressful on birds, especially those who are older or who are health-compromised.  Since a lot of our birds come to us with an unknown history, we would rather not risk their health by arranging long distance travel.
  • Legalities – The transport of exotic species across state lines, specifically those that are endangered, is often restricted by law.  This is something that we have to navigate very carefully as a rescue in order to remain compliant in our mission.
  • Resources – As a foster-based, 100% volunteer-run organization, we rely on our dedicated team to care for our birds.  Transporting them over long distances requires a lot of resources, not just for the bird but also for their supplies. We simply don’t have the volunteer capacity to manage this on a regular basis.
  • Adoption Process – Our process involves a home visit and several meet and greets with our birds to ensure a good fit.  It’s challenging to coordinate this for out-of-radius adopters, and we want to make sure every adoption goes as smoothly as possible.
  • Assistance –  We’re committed to providing ongoing support to our adopters. If any issues arise or if a bird needs to be returned, being local helps us offer quick and effective assistance.
