Last Sunday STAR Avian held our “Meet the Birds” event at the St. Louis Humane Society. We do this every so often, because not only is it a chance for you to meet the birds and maybe fall in love with your future companion, but it’s a great way to socialize them as well! We also have free educational seminars on basic bird care, and it’s a great event to meet new friends and reunite with old friends.
Did you miss this event? Our next “Meet the Birds” event is July 13th.

Desi is a sweet Sun Conure that is constantly wanting attention. He enjoys sitting on a perch out of his cage, or on top of his cage throughout the day. When he wants attention or feels like he is being ignored, he will make a loud caw like noise to try to get you to pick him up. During meal times, Desi’s favorite treat is wheat or oat bread with a little bit of peanut butter on it. He also enjoys many vegetables and a few fruits. Desi can bite, but it is rare that he does. When he is upset, it is possible to scratch his head and give him a few pets and he will then let you pick him up. He comes out of the cage easily and knows the command Step-Up. He also knows a few tricks such as “fly” which he will flap his wings, or “Go upside down” which will have him drop backwards off your finger and hold on upside down with one foot. He loves adult females, especially if they have long hair that he can play in and snuggle up against their neck.
Desi’s approximate hatch date is 2009
Watermelon is a gorgeous Peachfaced Love Bird who is at least ten years old. This little guy loves toys with bells; one minute he will bat, chew and squabble at the toy bell, the next minute he will cozy up to the bell, letting it rest on top of his head. He also enjoys almost daily bathes. Watermelon arrived at STAR because he didn’t receive enough attention at home. He was once very affectionate towards people, but is currently not hand tame. His foster mom is working to get him used to human attention again. Currently, he will eat millet from a person’s hand and he is starting to feel confident enough to step out of his cage. These are both great first steps. With time, he may again live up to his species namesake.
Watermelon’s approximate hatch date is 2003
Tommy is a handsome Nanday Conure. He arrived at the rescue very feather picked. The vet diagnosed an infection, which was treated. We are very hopeful that his feathers will regrow.
Tommy is uncommonly gentle. He gets along very well with other birds too. He is tame and loves to spend time with humans. His favorite place is on your shoulder. He is anxious to have a chance to meet you and become a part of your family.
